The cost of the TV licence fee is increasing once more, but individuals who no longer require a TV licence may qualify for a refund.
Currently priced at £174.50 annually, the TV licence fee will rise to £180 starting in April. A TV licence is necessary for watching or recording live TV, as well as for viewing any content – whether live or catch-up – on BBC iPlayer.
If your viewing is limited to catch-up shows via non-BBC iPlayer streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, ITVX, Disney Plus, YouTube, All 4, or My5, a TV licence is not needed. However, having a TV licence is mandatory if you access live shows through these services. Failure to comply could result in a fine of up to £1,000.
If you decide you no longer require your TV licence before it expires, you may be eligible for a refund provided you have at least one month remaining on it. Refunds are also available for those eligible for over 75 or blind concessions.
Remember, failure to have a TV licence for programs that require one could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
