A family have said their “hearts are shattered” after their “sweetest” baby tragically died in a car crash that left his mum with serious injuries.
Teddy Britten-Goddard, aged just 18 months, was killed in a collision on the A303 near Amesbury, Wiltshire, on March 28. He sustained life-threatening injuries in the three-vehicle crash at around 5.30pm and was rushed to hospital where he died despite the best efforts of medics. Several others were injured in the crash, including a five-year-old boy and a man in his 70s. Teddy’s family has now paid tribute to him in a post on the Salisbury Police Facebook page where they added that it “isn’t a goodbye but a see you later”.
They said: “It’s with a truly broken heart that I say this but our gorgeous boy gained his wings today. He was truly the sweetest most loving little character that we were blessed to have. Our hearts are shattered into pieces. Teddy Jason this isn’t a goodbye just a see you later.”
And Wiltshire Police also offered its condolences by saying: “The thoughts of those who attended the incident and the whole of Wiltshire Police are with Teddy’s family at this difficult time.” Many people have also taken to social media to express their sadness at what happened and offer their condolences.
“Oh dear Rest in Peace , God bless the whole family to be strong and take courage,” wrote one person on Facebook. “R.I.P flying high to play in the sky shine bright through the stars at night x thoughts with the family,” said another.
There were other similar comments with one stating: “Absolutely devastating, my heart goes out to the family and those who attended (emergency services) they are humans as well. Rest easy little fella,” and a further read: “The agonising pain this family must be going through. Such sad news. Rest peacefully little man.”
Teddy’s family set up a GoFundMe page shortly after the crash to help cover the day-to-day costs as Teddy fought for his life in hospital while his mum recovered from “serious injuries”. After Teddy’s death, Holly Britten shared: “My darling boy gained his wings and is now at peace. We will obviously use the gofundme to give him the best send off possible.
“Thank you to everyone that reached out to me from the last post wishing us well. Your love wasn’t and isn’t unnoticed. Teddy you will be missed my darling.”
Updating the GoFundMe, organiser Jack Goddard wrote: “The money will continue to be used to cover these every day costs until things become more stable. Some of the funds will be used to provide Teddy and his family with the best farewell possible.
“Any money remain[ing] will be donated to the Ronald McDonald house and the paediatric unit who did a wonderful job at looking after Teddy and supporting the family. Thank you to everyone who has donated so far. It is appreciated.”
The tragic crash happened after a grey Skoda Karoq joined the eastbound carriageway, smashing into a white Peugeot 208 which was travelling in the same direction on the A303. After colliding with the Skoda, the vehicle spun onto the westbound carriageway where it crashed head-on with a silver Volvo V70 near the Bulford junction.
Following the accident Wiltshire Police stated: “A one-year-old boy has sadly died following a road traffic collision on the A303 at Amesbury at about 5.30pm on Friday 28 March. Three vehicles were in collision on the eastbound carriageway, a Skoda Karoq, a Peugeot 208 and a Volvo V70.
“Four other people were injured in the collision. Our thoughts are very much with the family of the child who has died at this difficult time. We would ask that their privacy is respected.
“Any witnesses or anyone who may have dashcam is asked to contact the serious collision investigation team on 01225 694597 quoting log 220 of 28 March.”
