A young woman named Sophie Zenonos shared her story of battling cancer after being initially misdiagnosed with a chest infection. Despite experiencing symptoms like shortness of breath, fatigue, and a persistent cough starting in late 2019, Sophie’s concerns were dismissed by doctors who prescribed antibiotics. Her condition worsened over time, leading her to seek further medical attention in January 2020.
After multiple visits to healthcare professionals, Sophie’s breathlessness became severe, hindering her daily activities. It wasn’t until June 2020 that she underwent an X-ray scan, revealing a sizable tumor in her chest, indicating stage four Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma. Expressing frustration over the delayed diagnosis, Sophie emphasized the importance of advocating for oneself and seeking second opinions.
Following the grim diagnosis, Sophie underwent intensive chemotherapy and radiotherapy, eventually receiving clearance from blood cancer in May 2021. However, her battle didn’t end there as she was later diagnosed with thyroid cancer by the end of 2023. Despite undergoing surgery to remove her thyroid and affected lymph nodes, Sophie still faces challenges as some cancerous lymph nodes remain.
Encouraging others to trust their instincts and pursue thorough medical evaluations, Sophie stressed the significance of early detection for better treatment outcomes. Reflecting on her journey, she highlighted the impact of delayed diagnosis on her quality of life. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a cancer affecting the lymphatic system, typically presents as painless swelling in lymph nodes and is commonly treated with chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
