Dr. Bazire highlights that some people may fall within a “normal” weight range but could have underlying issues with how their bodies process nutrients, leading to a condition known as “metabolically unhealthy normal weight.”
Various symptoms can provide insight into one’s metabolic health status. A quick 30-second test involving measuring waist circumference in relation to height can serve as a reliable indicator of potential health issues. The key indicator is having a waist circumference less than half of one’s height to be considered in the “healthy range.”
Typically, this translates to <94cm/37in for men and <80cm/31.5in for women. Individuals outside this ratio may face health risks like diabetes and heart disease.
According to Dr. Bazire, metabolism refers to how the body processes nutrients to provide energy, support tissue repair, and maintain overall health. Maintaining good metabolic health involves receiving essential nutrients in proper proportions and processing them effectively to promote well-being.
Individuals categorized as "metabolically unhealthy normal weight" are at higher risk of metabolic-related conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease due to metabolic dysfunction, often linked to excess abdominal fat despite being within a normal weight range.
