“HMS Prince of Wales Joins NATO, Sending Message to Putin”

The HMS Prince of Wales, a renowned aircraft carrier of the Royal Navy, has been placed under NATO authority, marking a significant milestone for the alliance. This massive 280-meter-long carrier was participating in a training program in the Mediterranean and was en route to Italy for ‘Exercise Falcon Strike’ alongside 24 British F-35 jets.

This marks the first instance of NATO commanding a carrier strike group, which includes the HMS Prince of Wales, its accompanying vessels, and a sophisticated fleet of F-35 fighter jets. The move is seen as a strong message to Vladimir Putin, enhancing Europe’s defense against Russia.

Key discussions revolving around boosting defense cooperation would take place between Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, Defense Secretary John Healey, and their Italian counterparts. The British officials would be hosting Italian defense minister Guido Crosetto and foreign minister Antonio Tajani aboard the HMS Prince of Wales off the Naples coast.

The UK’s F-35 jets have been actively involved in joint exercises with Italian counterparts. The decision to place the carrier strike group under NATO’s command aligns with the UK’s strategy outlined in the Strategic Defence Review, emphasizing readiness to confront emerging threats and reinforcing alliances.

The carrier strike group is set to participate in the Neptune Strike NATO exercise, assessing the alliance’s capabilities in sea target strikes, aircraft carrier jet launches, and amphibious landings. Foreign Secretary Ms. Cooper emphasized the importance of international partnerships in strengthening national security and deterring adversaries.

After spending five months in the Indo-Pacific region engaging in drills with allies like Japan, Australia, and India, the carrier strike group’s return to the Mediterranean will involve collaborative efforts with forces from Greece, Albania, and Spain.
