A man who was homeless recounted a terrifying incident where an assailant violently attacked him, gouging out one of his eyes and savagely assaulting him by grinding his face into the ground.
The attacker, identified as Rudy Eugene, 31, assaulted Ronald Poppo in Miami, Florida, after stripping naked near a causeway and exhibiting erratic behavior. Eugene, a Miami resident, began acting strangely and screaming before launching a brutal attack on Poppo.
During the assault, Eugene used wrestling maneuvers to strangle Poppo and claw at his eyes, reportedly citing a “bad day on the beach” as the trigger for his violent outburst. Poppo described the ordeal, stating that Eugene viciously attacked him, tearing his face and plucking out his eyes while strangling him.
Poppo mentioned that initially, the attacker seemed calm but suddenly turned aggressive, making threatening remarks and displaying erratic behavior. Despite Poppo’s non-confrontational stance, Eugene continued his violent assault until police intervened.
Eugene was fatally shot by law enforcement officers as he ignored their commands to cease the attack, responding with aggressive growling. Poppo confirmed he had no prior acquaintance with Eugene and had not provoked the attack in any way.
Initial speculations suggested Eugene might have been under the influence of dangerous street drugs like bath salts, but toxicology reports revealed only the presence of marijuana in his system, ruling out other substances.
Family members of Eugene denied his violent tendencies, asserting that he did not engage in drug or alcohol abuse apart from using cannabis. His brother expressed disbelief at Eugene’s actions, stating that they did not align with his usual demeanor.
Adding to the mystery, Eugene’s girlfriend implied supernatural elements were at play in the attack, suggesting that someone had tampered with him. Meanwhile, Poppo underwent extensive reconstructive surgery following the assault, prompting the establishment of a fundraising foundation in his honor.
