Canada’s upcoming young curling talents will compete for a national title in Thunder Bay. The 2028 Canadian Under-18 Curling Championships, scheduled from April 2-8, 2028, at the Thunder Bay Tournament Centre, were announced by Curling Canada. Andrew Sinclair, the chair of the host committee, mentioned that the event will host 42 teams, each comprising four to five players and a coach, totaling around five to six individuals per team. This includes parents and grandparents supporting the young athletes, indicating a significant tourism opportunity.
Thunder Bay’s tourism manager, Paul Pepe, highlighted the economic impact of the event, estimating it to be around $2 million. He emphasized the importance of such events in boosting the local economy, especially during periods of excess hotel capacity. Pepe noted that hosting events like the U18 championship and other prominent curling events helps fill accommodation gaps, contributing to the community’s economic growth.
Pepe also emphasized how events like the U18 championship, the Grand Slam of Curling event in December, and the past hosting of the Scotties Tournament of Hearts enhance Thunder Bay’s reputation as a premier host city. Sinclair expressed optimism that the championship will encourage youth participation in curling, particularly at local curling clubs like Port Arthur, Fort William, and Kakabeka, fostering a sense of achievement and excitement among young curlers in the area.
