The St. Thomas Police Service (STPS) has announced that six individuals are facing a combined total of 64 criminal charges as a result of an extensive investigation into the suspected trafficking of fentanyl and other controlled substances. The investigation, known as Project Apex, commenced in March and led to the apprehension of the six suspects between March and August.
Throughout the course of the investigation, law enforcement officers conducted searches at various locations in St. Thomas, where they confiscated a significant quantity of illicit substances, including fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, prescription drugs, as well as cash and weapons. The estimated street value of the seized drugs is reported to be $32,185.
The confiscated substances comprised 3 grams of fentanyl valued at $19,430, 4 grams of cocaine valued at $5,440, 6 grams of methamphetamine valued at $2,260, 8 grams of crack cocaine valued at $1,680, and 487 prescription tablets, including Oxycodone, Dilaudid, Morphine, and other suspected controlled substances, valued at $3,375.
Additionally, authorities seized $4,016.28 in Canadian currency, a conducted energy weapon, a crossbow, and ammunition during the operation. Chief Marc Roskamp emphasized the severe impact of fentanyl on individuals, families, and the community, highlighting the necessity for a comprehensive strategy that combines enforcement actions against drug traffickers with supportive measures for those struggling with addiction.
The investigation is ongoing, with the police cautioning that the allegations against the accused parties have yet to be proven in court.
