“8-Year Prison Term for Cape Breton Woman in Fatal Stabbing”

A woman from Cape Breton has received an eight-year prison sentence for committing manslaughter against a long-time acquaintance. Carolyn Ann Dermody, aged 28, was initially charged with murder and disrespecting human remains in relation to the death of Natacha Leroy, aged 48, in November 2023.

Dermody’s sentencing occurred last month, and with credit for time served, she will spend an additional four years and three months behind bars. Details disclosed during the sentencing revealed that Dermody and Leroy were socializing at a residence in Millville, Cape Breton, alongside other individuals, engaging in drug and alcohol consumption. On the night of November 19, Dermody stabbed Leroy thrice in the abdomen.

In his sentencing ruling, Justice Patrick Duncan described the offense as displaying a heartless and unprovoked level of violence, especially noting Dermody’s multiple stabbings of Leroy in critical organ areas. The judge emphasized the brutal and life-threatening nature of the attack, highlighting Leroy’s vulnerable state due to being unarmed and intoxicated during the assault in close quarters.

Three days post the incident, Leroy’s family visited the residence where the stabbing occurred after hearing rumors of a violent incident. They found signs of a fire and blood outside the property, prompting them to contact the police. Subsequently, Leroy’s remains were discovered approximately 65 meters behind the house, partially obscured by debris.

Duncan expressed doubts regarding Dermody’s potential for rehabilitation, citing her recurrent legal conflicts, inability to manage anger, and a history of violent behaviors within and outside of correctional facilities. Alongside the prison sentence, Dermody’s DNA is now registered in a national database, and she is prohibited from owning any weapons for life.
