Skateboarding Legend Andy Kessler Dies from Wasp Sting

A veteran skateboarder known for his daring tricks met an unexpected and tragic end after being stung by a wasp. Andy Kessler, aged 49, was a pivotal figure in the New York City skateboarding scene, revolutionizing the sport by introducing ramp techniques for more complex maneuvers. Rising to fame in the 1970s with the renowned Souls Artists of Zoo York collective, he left a lasting impact on the skateboarding community.

In a heartbreaking turn of events in August 2009, Andy fell ill while assisting a friend in constructing a deck in East Hampton Town, following a wasp sting. Rushed to Montauk Medical Center, which was closed, he was then taken to Southampton Hospital, where he tragically succumbed. His close friend Moose Huerta revealed that Andy suffered a fatal heart attack triggered by an allergic reaction to the wasp venom, emphasizing the critical importance of immediate treatment for such allergies to prevent severe complications.

Reflecting on Andy’s untimely passing, fellow skateboarder Chris Nieratko expressed disbelief and profound sorrow, highlighting Andy’s enduring legacy of inspiring skaters to contribute to the skateboarding community and support future generations. Andy’s advocacy for skate parks led to the establishment of various facilities, including one in Riverside Park, showcasing his dedication to enhancing the skateboarding landscape.

Despite facing challenges like a significant medical bill after a skateboarding injury, Andy’s resilience and the support of his community enabled him to overcome obstacles and continue pursuing his passion for skateboarding. Renowned for his exceptional skills navigating city streets on his skateboard, Andy’s impact remains palpable, with a Manhattan skatepark being renamed in his honor in 2019 to commemorate his contributions to the sport.
