“Mother’s Turbulent Trip Turns Terrifying in Turkey”

A mother shared a harrowing experience when her ex-partner violently attacked her during a trip to Turkey, leaving her fearing for her life and the safety of her children. Helen Mulligan, 48, from Newton-Le-Willows, Merseyside, embarked on a quick romance with 52-year-old Christopher Sergeant in March 2024 after connecting on Facebook. Initially charming, Sergeant’s behavior turned possessive and aggressive over time.

Despite concerns from loved ones due to their turbulent relationship, Helen agreed to vacation with Sergeant in Turkey as friends. The trip took a dark turn when Sergeant erupted in anger, physically assaulting Helen. She recounted being pushed into a pool and later attacked in their hotel room, with Sergeant becoming increasingly violent and threatening.

Fearing for her life and desperate to escape, Helen managed to document her injuries and seek help from a friend. After a terrifying ordeal, including being choked and physically harmed, Helen was able to leave the room and eventually return home to her children. She reported the assault to Merseyside Police upon her return, leading to Sergeant’s arrest and subsequent legal proceedings.

Sergeant was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm in Turkey and later pleaded guilty in Liverpool Crown Court. He received a 20-month prison sentence, a 10-year restraining order, and was ordered to pay court costs. Helen, diagnosed with PTSD post-attack, continues to struggle with trauma-related symptoms, including nightmares and insomnia.
