“Beware Post-Christmas Cyberattack Risks”

The government is cautioning households about the heightened risk of cyberattacks during the post-Christmas period. With the influx of ‘smart’ devices received as Christmas gifts, adding to the already vast array of internet-connected gadgets in UK homes, individuals are vulnerable to potential security breaches. These devices range from smart speakers, fitness trackers, and security cameras to modern appliances like fridges, thermostats, kettles, washing machines, and toys.

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), under GCHQ, has highlighted the security implications of unsecured devices, warning that they could be exploited by criminals to infiltrate a household’s network or launch cyber attacks. Recent analysis of connected homes revealed an average of 10 attacks per day on devices, with security systems successfully averting around 1,736 threats per minute.

To address these risks, the government is urging households to invest a few minutes in setting up two-step verification on new device accounts or enabling automatic updates post-Christmas. Cyber Security Minister Baroness Lloyd emphasized the importance of securing smart devices to safeguard families and facilitate a worry-free holiday season filled with cherished memories.

Jonathan Ellison, NCSC director for national resilience, advised users to prioritize the security setup of new smart devices received during the festive period. Following the NCSC’s guidelines for smart device usage and activating two-step verification for critical accounts are recommended practices to enhance cybersecurity measures.

The government asserts the UK’s forefront position in safeguarding families against cyber threats, citing the Product Security and Telecommunications Infrastructure regulations implemented in April last year. These regulations mandate that all smart devices sold in the UK adhere to basic security standards, prohibiting default or easily guessable passwords.

As part of the festive security checklist, it is crucial for individuals to ensure the protection of their smart devices through proper setup and security measures in line with official guidelines.
