Holiday Chocolate Prices Soar: Budget-Friendly Options Revealed

As the holiday season approaches, many of us look forward to indulging in a tin of chocolates either for sharing with loved ones, guests, or simply for personal enjoyment. However, if you’re planning to purchase one, it might be wise to budget ahead.

Traditionally, a tin of festive chocolates would have cost no more than five pounds. Yet, during my recent visit to the supermarket, I was taken aback by the prices of Cadbury Roses and Heroes. Entering my local Sainsbury’s with the intention of treating myself to a tin of chocolates for a cozy movie night, I was shocked to find both 700g tins of Cadbury Roses and Heroes priced at £16.50.

Although there is a slight discount available for Nectar cardholders, bringing the price down to £10, it still seems quite high in my opinion.

Thankfully, Sainsbury’s offers more affordable options for chocolate lovers seeking Christmas tins. For instance, the Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate Mixed Chunks Tin (60g) is priced at £9.59, or £6.50 with a Nectar card. Additionally, a 750g tin of Quality Street is available for £13, or £8.50 with a Nectar card.

Alternatively, shoppers can opt for 500-550g tubs of Celebrations, Heroes, and Quality Street at just £6 each.

For those seeking better deals, Tesco might be the place to go. Currently, the same 500-550g Celebrations and Quality Street tubs are priced at just £3.95 with a Clubcard, or £4.50 without the discount. Moreover, the £16.50/£10 Heroes tin at Sainsbury’s is available for only £7.50 with a Clubcard at Tesco, though it is priced at £15 without a discount.

These observations follow a recent study that revealed the most budget-friendly supermarkets for Christmas chocolate tubs. Asda currently offers standard tubs of Heroes, Roses, and Celebrations for under £5, while Morrisons sells them for £7 (or £5.50 with a Morrisons More Card).

As detailed earlier, Tesco sells Celebrations and Quality Street tubs for just £3.95 with a Clubcard, while Roses and Heroes are priced at £7 (or £5.25 with a Clubcard). Additionally, Aldi and Lidl both offer tubs for under £5.

Although Marks and Spencer and Waitrose do not stock traditional tubs on their websites, they provide smaller pouch-sized packets and alternative festive chocolates ranging from approximately £4 to £10.
