“Starmer Denounces Attacks on Cabinet in Response to Leadership Plotting”

Keir Starmer has emphasized the unacceptability of any attack on a member of his Cabinet following reports of leadership plotting against Wes Streeting. This marks his first response since the emergence of intense briefing conflicts within the government. Starmer also commended the Health Secretary’s performance, countering speculation about his own leadership stability.

During a session of PMQs addressing the internal strife, Starmer lauded the Health Secretary’s efforts in reducing NHS waiting lists. Despite his assertions of a unified Cabinet, he faced skepticism from the opposing benches. Starmer reaffirmed his team’s dedication to serving the country, led by his chief-of-staff, Morgan McSweeney.

Responding to Tory leader Kemi Badenoch’s question regarding Streeting’s remarks on Downing Street’s culture, Starmer reiterated his commitment to national recovery. He firmly denounced any attacks on his Cabinet members as unacceptable. Starmer highlighted Streeting’s success in surpassing appointment targets under the Labour government.

Streeting himself rejected claims of orchestrating a leadership challenge, labeling such actions as counterproductive. He likened the internal discord to a TV show, emphasizing his support for the Prime Minister amid the turbulent environment. Streeting criticized the damaging nature of the leaked briefings and expressed his confusion over their purpose.

In an interview with Sky News, Streeting criticized the briefing tactics, likening them to sensationalized TV dramas. He condemned the misinformation being spread and questioned the motives behind undermining the Prime Minister’s leadership.
