Baby Atlas Overcomes Heart Defects with Open Heart Surgery

After mistaking their newborn’s cold symptoms, parents were shocked to discover baby Atlas had congenital heart defects. The couple, residing in Peckham, London, endured a month-long hospital stay as their son underwent open heart surgery. Matt Jukes expressed feelings of fear, devastation, and shock during this challenging period.

Atlas displayed signs such as mottled skin, jaundice, and feeding difficulties from birth, initially attributed to a tongue tie and reflux. By the fifth week, he became increasingly distressed, prompting further concerns. Despite being discharged by medical professionals, the parents observed worsening symptoms, leading to a critical doctor’s appointment.

Following worrisome symptoms including labored breathing, Atlas was diagnosed with a coarctation of the aorta and a ventricular septal defect at six weeks old. The family stayed at Evelina Children’s Hospital for four weeks, with Atlas undergoing open heart surgery shortly after diagnosis.

The surgery and subsequent recovery were emotionally taxing for the family. Post-surgery, Atlas required intensive care, multiple medications, and close monitoring. Eventually, he made a remarkable recovery, shedding his feeding tube and medications by six months.

During this challenging time, Matt found solace in sketching for his son, which evolved into an art series donated to the heART project. The sketches, depicting imaginary adventures, encapsulated intimate moments shared between father and son.

Fortunately, Atlas is now thriving, with a successful cardiology review indicating positive progress. The family aims to raise awareness about congenital heart defects and inspire parents to advocate for their children’s health. Tansy, a cinematographer, is participating in a marathon fundraiser to support Evelina Children’s Hospital.

Matt’s artwork, alongside renowned artists’ pieces, will be featured in the heART auction, benefiting heart research initiatives. Through their journey, the family hopes to provide comfort and encouragement to others facing similar challenges.
