Brazilian Social Media Star Dies from Contaminated Whiskey

A popular Brazilian social media personality passed away this week following an incident where she and her guests consumed a homemade whiskey believed to be contaminated with methanol during her 26th birthday celebration.

Yasmim Ângela Feitosa de Souza, known for her Instagram comedy content with a following of 23,000, commemorated her birthday in Petrolina, Brazil. The fatal whiskey was reportedly purchased by her and her partner from a rural village near São Bento do Una city and shared with a friend at the event held on a Monday night.

According to de Souza’s mother, they consumed approximately one and a half liters of the whiskey. While her boyfriend felt unwell the next day, de Souza appeared to be in good spirits, interacting with everyone joyfully.

However, de Souza started feeling unwell later that night and succumbed quickly to the suspected poisoning, as per her mother. Both de Souza’s boyfriend and the friend who shared the drink with them were hospitalized with suspected methanol poisoning. Their current conditions are unknown as of Thursday, as reported by the Mirror US.

De Souza’s mother, Ozenilda Feitosa, shared, “They drank on Monday night, and then my daughter’s boyfriend woke up feeling very unwell. Yasmim, however, was happy all day, joking with everyone.

“She accompanied me to the market, we did our grocery shopping and had lunch out. That night she started feeling unwell,” Ozenilda told g1. “And then I couldn’t do anything to save my daughter.”

An ongoing investigation is being conducted into the circumstances surrounding de Souza’s tragic death, as per g1 sources.

Methanol, a clear liquid, is commonly used in various industrial applications such as cleaning products, solvents, and fuel processing. Human exposure to methanol, often through adulterated beverages, can lead to severe poisoning, according to the National Institute of Health.

Symptoms of methanol poisoning may include nausea, abdominal pain, visual disturbances, dizziness, weakness, and altered consciousness.
