Five individuals lost their lives in a tragic accident in Co Louth over the weekend amid severe weather conditions, leaving Ireland in mourning. The incident occurred on the L3168 near Dundalk, involving a VW Golf and a Toyota Land Cruiser colliding. The victims, three men and two women in their 20s, were pronounced dead at the scene, prompting a major response from the authorities.
A male occupant of the VW Golf sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was hospitalized, while a man and a woman from the Toyota were also taken to the same hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening. Superintendent Charlie Armstrong commended the professionalism of the emergency responders at the challenging scene.
The tragic loss of the young adults has deeply affected communities in Carrickmacross, Dromconrath, and Scotland, in addition to Dundalk. An investigation is ongoing, with an incident room established at Dundalk Garda Station and a forensic examination being conducted at the crash site.
