England Frustrated Over Controversial Decision in Ashes Test

England expressed frustration over a mistake that allowed Alex Carey to evade dismissal after edging behind at the Adelaide Oval. Carey scored a significant 106 runs as Australia ended day one of the third Ashes Test at 326-8, but he should have been out at 72.

The Australian wicket-keeper seemed to edge a delivery from Josh Tongue to Jamie Smith when his team was at 245-6. Despite England’s appeal, umpire Ahsan Raza ruled it not out, leading Ben Stokes to request a review.

The review indicated a spike on the ‘Snicko’ technology, suggesting bat contact, but the spike occurred before the ball passed the bat, prompting TV umpire Chris Gaffaney to uphold the on-field decision.

England was confused and upset by the ruling, especially as a similar incident had led to Jamie Smith being given out in the first Test at Perth. It was revealed that the error occurred due to the technology operator mistakenly using the stump mic audio from the bowlers’ end, causing a mismatch between sound and visuals.

Carey, who had previously been involved in a controversial run-out of Jonny Bairstow in the 2023 Ashes, admitted post-match that he had made contact with the ball. He remarked on the unusual sound timing during the incident and acknowledged his luck in the outcome.

England’s bowling coach, David Saker, hinted that the team might raise concerns with match referee Jeff Crowe regarding the incident. ‘Snicko’ discrepancies have been a recurring topic throughout the series, with complaints about alignment with TV footage.

The replay of the incident sparked confusion among fans and commentators. Former England captain Michael Vaughan, commenting on BBC Test Match Special, expressed surprise at the situation, highlighting the spike on ‘Snicko’ despite no contact with the ball.
