Motorists are currently experiencing disruptions on a major motorway this evening as traffic has come to a standstill due to an active police incident. Emergency services, along with Highways Officers, are present on the northbound section of the M6 motorway, situated between junction 20 leading to the M56 and junction 21 towards A57 Manchester Road.
According to the live traffic service Inrix, the traffic halt is a result of a collision, leading to the police blocking off multiple lanes and enforcing a temporary hold on all traffic. Inrix reported, “Severe delays and congestion are occurring due to an accident on M6 Thelwall Viaduct Northbound between J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) and J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston).”
Fortunately, the severe delays and queues caused by the earlier collision have now been resolved. In an update, Inrix mentioned, “Previous delays have been resolved, following an accident on M6 Thelwall Viaduct Northbound between J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) and J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston).”
National Highways has confirmed that all vehicles involved in the incident have been moved out of the active lanes, resulting in the reopening of all lanes on the northbound side of the M6 between junction 20 (M56) and junction 21 (Warrington) after the collision. However, there are delays beyond the normal travel time, with an additional 60-minute delay expected for clearance.
Despite the resolution, two lanes on the northbound M6, between junctions 20 and 21, remain closed as a result of the earlier collision. Motorists are advised to anticipate delays of up to an hour on their journeys. National Highways has specifically mentioned that two out of four lanes on the M6 are shut down due to a crash, causing significant delays.
Inrix also highlighted that all lanes were briefly closed off this evening during the response to the collision, leading to severe delays. It stated, “Traffic is temporarily halted, resulting in major delays due to an accident on M6 Thelwall Viaduct Northbound between J20 M56 J9 (Lymm Interchange) and J21 A57 Manchester Road (Woolston).”
