A well-respected church leader met a tragic end after his vehicle was hit by a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) due to a tire blowout on the M60 motorway. The HGV lost control and veered across lanes near Swinton, Salford, crashing through a barrier into oncoming traffic, colliding with a BMW id5 driven by David Lalgee, 64, who was with his wife Jo.
David Lalgee, a grandfather of nine, suffered severe injuries and passed away despite medical efforts. His family released a statement praising his heroic act of swerving to shield his wife from the oncoming HGV, sacrificing his life to save hers.
The coroner ruled out any criminal wrongdoing or driving negligence in the incident, attributing the collision to an unavoidable tire blowout. Witnesses described the impact as similar to an explosion, with the HGV driver identified as Tracy Carradice.
Investigations revealed no pre-existing mechanical issues with the HGV or its tires. Detective Sergeant Matthew Waggett confirmed that the driver’s actions did not contribute to the accident, which was triggered by the tire blowout and subsequent loss of control.
Despite extensive investigations, the cause of the tire failure remains unknown. Tracy Carradice, an experienced HGV driver, recounted the moment of impact, emphasizing her efforts to regain control of the vehicle.
David Lalgee, a former police officer and pastor of an evangelical church in Blackpool, was remembered as a selfless and caring individual by his family and community. The coroner expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and acknowledged David’s significant contributions to society.
The exact reason behind the tire blowout remains a mystery, leaving unanswered questions about the unfortunate incident.
