“Inquiry Blames Boris Johnson for Covid Chaos and Avoidable Deaths”

An inquiry has revealed that Boris Johnson fostered a tumultuous environment within his government during the peak of the Covid pandemic, where decisions were often influenced by the most vocal individuals rather than by sound judgment. The report by the Covid Inquiry criticized the government’s pandemic management, attributing thousands of avoidable deaths and unnecessary lockdowns to Johnson’s lack of clear and timely directives.

The inquiry, led by Baroness Hallett, highlighted that the former Prime Minister’s leadership style encouraged disruptive figures like Dominic Cummings to disrupt the decision-making process. This culture, as noted by Baroness Hallett, prioritized the loudest voices, frequently ignoring the input of other colleagues, particularly women, to the detriment of effective decision-making.

One contentious outcome of this chaotic governance was the implementation of the £840 million Eat Out to Help Out initiative without adequate consultation with the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE). Despite aiming to revive the economy by offering dining discounts in August 2020, the scheme was criticized by government scientific advisors for potentially increasing infection rates.

The inquiry exposed that the scheme conflicted with established public health guidelines on social distancing and indoor socializing, ultimately undermining efforts to curb the spread of the virus. Although Boris Johnson initially claimed that scientific advice was considered in the scheme’s development, it was later confirmed that no scientific advisors participated in the pivotal discussions with Chancellor Rishi Sunak.

Despite providing a much-needed economic boost to the hospitality sector, the Eat Out to Help Out program coincided with a sharp rise in Covid cases, with reported UK testing numbers surging by 250% over a two-week period. This evidence underscores the detrimental impact of decisions made within the government’s chaotic inner circle during a critical phase of the pandemic.
