“Families Criticize Govt’s Covid Response: Scathing Inquiry Report”

Families who lost their loved ones during the pandemic are criticizing the Tory government’s handling of the crisis following a scathing Covid inquiry report.

Deborah Doyle, a member of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice UK, delivered a poignant speech at the National Covid Memorial Wall opposite Parliament. The activist expressed her concerns after an inquiry pointed out governmental chaos and a lack of seriousness about Covid-19, which resulted in 23,000 deaths during the initial wave.

According to the report, former Prime Minister Boris Johnson oversaw a “toxic” environment in Number 10, frequently changing his decisions. Additionally, cabinet members like Health Secretary Matt Hancock and key scientists failed to respond promptly to combat the virus.

Deborah, who lost her mother to the pandemic, emphasized, “The inquiry clearly blames Boris Johnson for the catastrophic mishandling of the pandemic. The government’s failure led to numerous deaths that could have been prevented.”

She further stated, “Many lives could have been saved if Johnson and his colleagues had acted differently. The report highlights the government’s flawed approach from the outset. By heeding scientific advice and implementing earlier lockdowns, approximately 23,000 lives could have been spared.”

Throughout the pandemic, Boris Johnson prioritized his political image over public safety, leading to prolonged and ineffective lockdowns. Ignoring scientific recommendations that conflicted with his agenda, he repeated mistakes from the past, prolonging the impact of the virus.

Reflecting on the lost opportunities to spend more time with their loved ones, Mandy Phillips from Surrey expressed satisfaction with the report’s findings. Larry Byrne from Windsor criticized the government’s delayed actions during the crisis, highlighting the poor decision-making that affected the nation.

The report also featured testimonials from bereaved families who have emerged as advocates for others nationwide. Joanna Goodman, a co-founder of Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, shared her difficulties in grieving and the emotional toll of feeling that her father’s death was avoidable.

A member of Scottish Covid Bereaved expressed frustration over the lack of consideration for vulnerable individuals during the pandemic, citing personal experiences of losing a parent due to Covid-19.

The families impacted by the government’s handling of the crisis emphasize the need for immediate implementation of the inquiry’s recommendations to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
