“Major Investment Unveiled: Revolutionizing Northern Rail Travel”

Working individuals have long been left behind by our economy’s shortcomings.

The previous administration prioritized disorder and insecurity over improving living standards. They opted not to allocate resources to enhance our transportation systems, including trains, buses, and roads. There was no emphasis on investing in renewable energy or preparing for future job opportunities. Neglecting our schools, hospitals, and communities further hindered economic growth.

Residents in the North have experienced the adverse effects of insufficient investment firsthand – a reality I understand well from my 16 years of service as a Leeds Member of Parliament.

Yesterday, I proudly unveiled a significant investment in Northern rail, the largest in a generation, in collaboration with local leaders to develop and implement the initiative.

The Northern Powerhouse Rail project is set to revolutionize travel by facilitating faster and more frequent connections between Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Bradford, Sheffield, and York, with extended services reaching Newcastle, Hull, and beyond.

Presently, individuals residing in Liverpool have access to only two rapid trains per hour to Manchester. The journey time to Manchester Airport, a mere 28 miles away, can take up to one hour and 25 minutes.

In Leeds, the lack of mass transit infrastructure leaves it as the largest city in Western Europe with only a third of its population able to reach the city center within 30 minutes.

These challenges are not merely inconveniences; they impede job opportunities, business growth, and family life across the North. The proposed investment aims to address these issues, offering faster commutes, improved connections, and more quality time with loved ones instead of waiting at train stations. This initiative builds upon previous measures we have implemented.

We have recently frozen rail fares for the first time in three decades and maintained the £3 cap on bus fares, stretching the budgets of individuals in the region. By effectively linking our major Northern cities, we unlock their full potential.

Manchester’s thriving technology sector, Leeds’ emergence as a financial hub, Sheffield’s advancements in manufacturing, Liverpool’s contributions to life sciences, and Newcastle’s leadership in clean energy are all poised for further growth. Elevating productivity in the North to the national average could inject an additional £40 billion annually into our economy, benefiting schools, hospitals, and public services.

Recognizing the potential of our vibrant Northern cities is not a new concept. Previous administrations spoke of “levelling up” while infrastructure deteriorated, causing delays and disruptions in transportation and prompting young people to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Acknowledging past broken promises, we are committed to taking tangible actions. The North played a pivotal role in establishing railways that revolutionized the world, and now we are investing in railways that will transform the North. Our government is dedicated to fulfilling its commitments, ensuring promises are kept, and ensuring the North is not overlooked
