A charity providing 17,000 meals weekly to a deprived UK community is in danger of closing within months, according to its CEO. The Blackpool Big Food Project, which started as a small initiative in 2012, has grown into a crucial support system for thousands of individuals in Blackpool, Fylde, and Wyre by receiving and distributing hundreds of tons of food. Facing financial challenges, the project has launched two initiatives – Festive Feed and 26 for 26 – to gather public and business support amid the holiday season.
CEO Claire Powell emphasized the increasing struggles faced by families during Christmas, not only for gifts but also for basic necessities like food. The charity, witnessing a rise in dependents during winter, aims to provide essential aid beyond just food, including financial advice and support services.
The organization is on track to surpass its previous assistance record by the end of the financial year, showcasing the growing need for its services. Claire highlighted the project’s significance in addressing the severe challenges faced by vulnerable individuals in the community.
The ultimate goal of the Big Food Project is to eliminate food insecurity and transition to offering comprehensive financial guidance to those in need. However, financial constraints have prompted an urgent call for public and private contributions to sustain operations and continue supporting the community effectively.
One beneficiary, Lisa Parkinson, and her family, emphasized the critical role the project played in their lives during challenging times. Lisa, now a volunteer, highlighted the transformative impact of the charity on the community, including healthcare workers benefiting from its services.
The project’s critical services, provided without judgment, have become a lifeline for many, offering affordable shopping opportunities and essential support. To ensure the sustainability of its operations, the Big Food Project is seeking support from businesses and individuals to continue serving those in need.
Donations for the Festive Feed initiative can be made online to help families enjoy a hearty Christmas meal and receive needed support during the holiday season. Additionally, the 26 for ’26 campaign aims to secure the future of food support across the Fylde coast by partnering with local businesses for sustained assistance.
