Boots has introduced a new offering for its customers. The private Vitamin B12 Injection Service is now accessible in over 145 stores across the UK, giving eligible individuals a way to manage crucial nutrient levels and tackle deficiencies. Vitamin B12 is essential for maintaining a healthy nervous system.
A deficiency in this vitamin can lead to various health issues, such as tiredness, low energy, and muscle weakness. The Boots Vitamin B12 Service aims to support those with potential dietary gaps, particularly individuals following strict plant-based or vegetarian diets, as Vitamin B12 is mainly present in meat, fish, and dairy products.
Notably, Vitamin B12 deficiency is more common in older adults, affecting about one in 10 individuals aged 75 and above, and one in 20 individuals aged 65 to 74, as per NHS data. Customers are eligible for a single injection if they have received a ‘low’ Vitamin B12 result from the Boots Vitamin B12 Blood Test Kit within a month before their appointment.
Following the appointment, a Boots healthcare professional will refer the customer to their GP for further evaluation and to identify any underlying causes. The service also allows for regular injection administration to adults aged 18 and above with a confirmed diagnosis of a permanent Vitamin B12 deficiency from their GP.
Claire Nevinson, superintendent pharmacist at Boots, stated: “The launch of our Vitamin B12 Service offers customers convenient access to necessary nutritional support at the right time. This service complements our own brand Vitamin B12 Blood Test Kit, enabling us to provide customers with a seamless private testing experience, connecting them to expert advice from a clinician based on their results. It showcases how Boots can be a primary healthcare destination for managing nutrition and addressing deficiencies, right on the high street.”
Each appointment lasts around 20 minutes and costs £29 per dose. Customers can schedule appointments online at boots.com or visit a participating store.
The introduction of the Vitamin B12 Service expands Boots’ array of over 180 healthcare services, delivered both in-store on behalf of the NHS and privately, along with digital private services through Boots Online Doctor. For those considering whether the service is suitable for them, Claire Nevinson addresses three common queries about Vitamin B12.
Explaining further, Claire highlighted: “Vitamin B12, a water-soluble vitamin, plays a critical role in the body. While it is commonly found in meat and dairy products like fish, milk, cheese, eggs, and fortified foods such as breakfast cereals and plant-based milks, individuals on vegan or vegetarian diets may struggle to obtain sufficient B12 as it is not naturally present in fruits, vegetables, or grains.
“For most individuals, a balanced diet provides adequate Vitamin B12, but if dietary gaps exist or there is an underlying cause for deficiency, considering a supplement or exploring the Boots Vitamin B12 Service may be beneficial.”
Moreover, Claire advised: “Common symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency include weakness, fatigue, shortness of breath, loss of appetite, headaches, mouth ulcers, digestive issues, and mild depression. If experiencing any of these symptoms, it is advisable to consult a GP.”
She cautioned: “If you suspect a Vitamin B12 deficiency, seek medical attention promptly for testing and appropriate treatment. Your GP can help determine the cause of symptoms or deficiency.
“In most cases, Vitamin B12 deficiency can be easily managed. For individuals with low levels due to dietary gaps but not a deficiency, incorporating a daily vitamin supplement into their diet could be considered.”
The new service is available in select stores and is subject to eligibility criteria and charges, with availability varying. Boots underscored that food supplements are intended to complement, not replace, a balanced, varied diet or a healthy lifestyle.
