During a cleanup operation at an abandoned bingo hall, biohazard cleaning professionals encountered highly toxic mushrooms that were unfamiliar to them.
Megan Johnstone and Jack Tozer from Pro Clean Commercials undertook the task of removing hazardous mold and fungi from the Grand Cinema in Bournemouth. Megan, aged 23, expressed surprise at the discovery of the mushrooms, identified as Serpula lacrymans, a type of fungus notorious for causing dry rot.
These fungi come in various sizes, with colors ranging from brown to white. Megan mentioned, “I had never encountered anything like this before, so it was completely new to me. I had to conduct some research and consult with colleagues in the industry to gather insights.”
She added, “Even individuals I know who deal with similar situations and the instructor from my biohazard training course confirmed they had never seen such mushrooms.”
On November 5, the management company enlisted their services to clean the deserted hall, ensuring a safe environment for subsequent contractors. However, the duo was taken aback when they stumbled upon the peculiar-looking mushrooms.
Describing the removal process, Megan explained, “We utilized shovels and a garden trowel to carefully excavate the mushrooms. Subsequently, we disposed of them as waste and treated the affected area to prevent mold and other hazardous substances.”
She speculated that the fungus proliferated due to a roof leak and poor ventilation caused by the boarded-up structure. Megan elaborated, “The absence of ventilation in the spacious area led to high moisture levels, contributing to the growth of the Serpula lacrymans fungus.”
Established nearly five years ago in Dorset, Megan’s business specializes in commercial cleaning services. Recently, they ventured into biohazard cleaning, with the bingo hall assignment marking their inaugural project in this domain.
Reflecting on her career path, Megan disclosed, “While my initial aspiration was to join the police force, I found myself drawn to this industry during my studies to earn extra income. I consider my job akin to an emergency services role, often necessitating entry into perilous sites posing life-threatening risks.”
Looking ahead, Megan aims to expand her business by establishing a training academy for biohazard cleaning and undertaking larger projects to enhance her company’s growth. She expressed, “I feel like I am fulfilling my policing ambitions through my biohazard work, providing assistance in trauma and emergency cleaning scenarios. It allows me to assist individuals in need and ensure their safety.”
