“Ex-Navy Chief Warns of Nuclear Standoff Risk with Russia”

The ex-chief of the Navy has raised concerns about the potential for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to escalate into a nuclear standoff. Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, issued a stark warning, stating that Britain is essentially engaged in a conflict with Moscow.

He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” which involves hostile activities that do not fit the traditional definition of armed conflict, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone intrusions along Nato’s eastern border. Lord West expressed uncertainty about finding a resolution to the conflict, as a full-scale war between Nato and Russia would not be desirable.

Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, who oversaw a thorough review of the nation’s defense capabilities, emphasized that Britain is inadequately prepared to counter the threats it is facing. Previous warnings from experts have highlighted Russia’s increasing hostilities towards the UK, including cyberattacks, espionage flights, arson attacks, and submarine violations.

Sir Ken McCallum, the head of MI5, recently stated that Russia is intent on causing chaos and destruction globally but is now resorting to using expendable proxies following the expulsion of its spies from European embassies. Lord Robertson reiterated the urgent need for better preparedness and vigilance, emphasizing that the country is under constant cyberattacks, despite appearances suggesting otherwise.

He pointed out that the recent cyber disruptions are likely orchestrated by the GRU, the Russian military intelligence agency. Furthermore, he noted that Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond territorial expansion in eastern Ukraine, causing concerns in neighboring countries like Moldova and Azerbaijan.

Supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government is crucial at this juncture to dissuade Vladimir Putin from further aggression. The goal is to show Putin that his current actions will not lead to victory, as his territorial gains are minimal at best.
