“Four-year-old girl suffers serious spinal injury at play area”

A mother has shared the story of how her four-year-old daughter suffered a serious spinal injury after a freak accident at a soft play area. Lillie Russell was at the base of a slide when another child collided into her from behind, causing a condition known as ‘accident induced scoliosis’ which led to a 70-degree curvature of her spine.

Despite undergoing three spine stretching procedures under general anesthesia, Lillie still needs to wear a back brace for 22 hours daily. The next step in her treatment involves surgery to insert metal rods into her spine, which is pending until she gains more weight. Her recovery journey is projected to conclude at age 18 with a final spinal fusion procedure.

Amelia Russell, Lillie’s mother, expressed her shock at the unexpected injury from a play session and the subsequent challenges faced during Lillie’s treatment. The family, including Lillie’s father Dan and siblings Albie and Rosie, navigated through the stress of managing their roofing business alongside Lillie’s medical procedures.

Despite the difficulties, the family remains positive and has created an Instagram account to share Lillie’s story and provide support to others with scoliosis. With the help of Staysure insurance, they were able to enjoy a much-needed vacation in Turkey. Sophie Davis from Staysure praised Lillie’s resilience and highlighted the importance of supporting families dealing with various medical conditions during travel. Staysure has assisted over 7,000 children with medical conditions, emphasizing the significance of ensuring safety and protection for families on holiday.
