Anthony Joshua’s driver in Nigeria is set to face charges for ‘reckless driving’ following a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of two of the boxer’s close associates. The individual, a 47-year-old member of Joshua’s Nigerian logistics team, is expected to be formally charged within the next 48 hours, as reported by The Daily Mail.
After being discharged from a hospital in Lagos on New Year’s Eve, the driver was transferred to Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun state, where the fatal crash occurred. He underwent questioning for several hours, providing an official account of the events leading up to the accident, which claimed the lives of Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele, two of Joshua’s dear friends.
Joshua, who has also been released from the hospital, paid his respects to Ghami and Ayodele at a funeral home along with his mother before their repatriation to the UK.
According to a police source cited by The Daily Mail, the driver, after receiving treatment for minor injuries, was taken to the state police headquarters for interrogation. The source mentioned that a charging decision for reckless driving is expected within the next 48 hours, possibly leading to a court appearance on Friday.
The incident involved Joshua traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary truck on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The driver of the truck, who fled the scene, has been declared wanted by the police. Babatunde Akinbiyi, a spokesperson for Ogun State’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, highlighted overspeeding and a burst front tire as contributing factors to the crash.
Eddie Hearn, chairman of Joshua’s promotional company Matchroom, expressed condolences for Ghami and Ayodele on social media, mourning the loss of the two individuals.
