“Cantona Slams Ratcliffe for Disinterest in Rebuilding United”

Eric Cantona has criticized Sir Jim Ratcliffe, stating that the Manchester United chief showed disinterest in Cantona’s offer to assist in rebuilding the club. Cantona also mentioned that the current leadership has damaged Sir Alex Ferguson’s legacy.

Earlier this year, Cantona disclosed that he had offered help to Ratcliffe in reviving United, but the Ineos chief did not take up the offer despite acquiring a minority stake in the club in 2024.

Cantona had previously condemned Ratcliffe over job cuts at Old Trafford and accused the club of compromising its principles. He elaborated on his attempt to support Ratcliffe and the Glazers during a show on his solo tour.

Expressing his disappointment, Cantona stated, “I had considered setting aside my other interests to contribute to a club that has meant everything to me. However, he didn’t show interest. I fulfilled my obligations, so I bear no guilt. Sir Alex Ferguson instilled a style of attractive attacking football that the new owners should have preserved. Instead, they dismantled it.”

Ferguson had established United as a dominant force domestically before stepping down as manager in 2015. Following his managerial tenure, Ratcliffe and associates sought to end Ferguson’s lucrative agreement with the club.

Cantona strongly criticized the decision, questioning Ratcliffe’s intentions, including plans for a new 100,000-seat stadium. He emphasized the importance of respecting figures like Ferguson and preserving the club’s heritage.

Regarding potential changes to Old Trafford, Cantona compared it to Arsenal leaving Highbury, suggesting that a stadium change could diminish United’s identity. He highlighted the significance of maintaining the historic stadium and criticized the directors’ approach as purely economic.
