A British man’s overseas dream life turned nightmarish when he was imprisoned in Dubai on false drug charges. Luke Tully, 47, had relocated from north London to Dubai in 2018 to manage two restaurants and lead a lavish lifestyle, making a substantial income each month. However, his world crumbled when authorities arrested him unjustly.
Tully spent two harrowing years in a jail filled with criminals, including sex offenders and abusers, despite being wrongly accused and convicted. His troubles began when he became acquainted with a man who arranged VIP tables at a prominent nightclub in Dubai. This individual patronized Tully’s restaurants and was considered a friend, leading to unforeseen consequences.
The pivotal moment occurred when the man was caught with cocaine, leading the police to investigate further. They found a text message from Tully regarding a restaurant reservation, which they misconstrued as code for drug dealings. Subsequently, a dramatic police raid on Tully’s home ensued, disrupting his plans to watch a football match.
Tully described a terrifying ordeal during his arrest, involving physical assaults and threats by plainclothes officers. Despite no evidence of drug possession or usage, he was detained without a fair trial. The conditions in the Dubai prison were appalling, with overcrowding and inadequate facilities.
While incarcerated, Tully faced the grim possibility of a lengthy imprisonment or even the death penalty. Fortunately, after enduring the ordeal for over 19 months, the case against him collapsed. Upon his deportation to the UK, Tully reflected on his experience, acknowledging personal growth despite the traumatic events in Dubai.
