“DragonFire Laser System Protects UK: Advances Defense Tech”

Britain’s innovative DragonFire laser system has successfully intercepted fast-moving drones, providing a significant advancement for national defense. Recent trials conducted at the MOD’s Hebrides range demonstrated the laser’s capability to take down drones traveling at speeds of up to 650km/h, surpassing the velocity of a Formula 1 car. The high-precision laser, resembling technology from Star Wars, boasts a cost of only £10 per shot and exhibits remarkable accuracy, capable of hitting a £1 coin from a kilometer away.

Following these successful tests, a £316 million contract has been granted to MBDA to supply new systems to the Royal Navy starting in 2027, with plans to equip a Royal Navy Type 45 destroyer five years earlier than initially scheduled. The DragonFire laser, a part of the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), marks the introduction of the first high-power laser system by a European nation, positioning it as one of the most sophisticated directed energy weapons programs within NATO.

The implementation of the cutting-edge DragonFire laser is expected to generate and sustain 590 jobs throughout the UK, highlighting the role of defense as a catalyst for economic growth. This initiative will create 200 highly skilled positions in Scotland, 185 jobs in the South West of England, and 75 opportunities in the East of England, aligning with the Government’s Plan for Change.

Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard MP, emphasized the significance of the high-power laser in positioning the Royal Navy at the forefront of innovation within NATO, enhancing the UK’s defense capabilities in response to evolving threats. He underscored the commitment to supporting British industry and job creation in defense, promoting economic growth nationwide.

Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander emphasized the critical role of Scottish expertise in the UK’s national security, citing the recent accomplishments of the DragonFire system in drone interception trials. He emphasized Scotland’s global reputation as a hub for defense excellence and highlighted the impact of defense investments in fostering economic growth and job opportunities within the region.
