“Manchester Mayor Raises Alarm Over Asylum System Changes”

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, has expressed concerns regarding the government’s proposed changes to the asylum system, warning that it could leave individuals in a state of uncertainty and hinder their integration. Burnham acknowledged the need for reform, as advocated by Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, but raised objections to the potential extension of the waiting period for asylum seekers to settle permanently from five to 20 years.

Under the new plan, individuals granted refugee status would undergo status reviews every two-and-a-half years, with the possibility of being repatriated if their home country is deemed safe. Burnham emphasized the importance of ensuring that people are not left in a state of limbo without the opportunity to fully integrate into society.

While Burnham commended Mahmood for initiating comprehensive reform, he underscored the necessity of engaging in a thoughtful discussion following the proposed measures. Concurrently, Home Secretary Mahmood defended the reforms in response to criticism, including concerns raised by Labour MPs and Lord Alf Dubs, a 92-year-old who fled the Nazis as a child.

Mahmood clarified that the policy targets failed asylum seekers, not refugees, and outlined measures to encourage voluntary departures from the UK, including potential financial incentives. She emphasized the importance of responsible policymaking and efficient resource allocation, aiming to address the challenges within the asylum system effectively.
