“New ‘Fuel Finder’ Initiative to Slash Fuel Costs for Millions”

Millions of drivers stand to benefit from a new government initiative aimed at reducing fuel costs. Under this scheme, the approximately 8,350 fuel stations nationwide are required to promptly notify customers of any changes in petrol and diesel prices. This information will be shared with third-party platforms and apps, enabling drivers to compare fuel prices in real-time and potentially save significant amounts in the long run.

The initiative, known as ‘Fuel Finder,’ will ensure that all petrol stations comply with strict guidelines regarding price transparency. Failure to adhere to these regulations may result in penalties of up to 1% of the station’s global annual revenue. The move comes in response to concerns that drivers have been overpaying for fuel, with even a small price difference of 5p per liter potentially saving the average driver £2.75 per fill-up.

Edmund King, president of the AA motoring group, emphasized the importance of empowering drivers with information to make informed decisions about where to refuel. The initiative is expected to mirror similar practices in other European countries, where price transparency has led to increased competition and lower fuel costs.

Simon Williams, head of policy at the RAC, expressed optimism that the initiative would pave the way for more competitive fuel prices across the UK. By encouraging daily price submissions from a growing number of forecourts, drivers will have easy access to real-time pricing information, allowing them to choose the most cost-effective options for refueling.

Currently, the national average price for unleaded petrol stands at 132.1p per liter, while diesel is priced at 141.2p per liter.
