An estimated one million individuals failed to meet the self-assessment tax deadline, resulting in an immediate £100 penalty from HMRC.
Recent statistics from HMRC reveal that on the deadline day of January 31, 475,722 taxpayers submitted their tax returns, with 27,456 individuals filing in the final hour before midnight.
For the tax year 2024/25, over 12 million people were projected to file tax returns and settle any taxes owed. Surpassing expectations, 11.48 million individuals timely filed their returns.
Individuals required to complete a self-assessment include the self-employed and those earning additional income beyond their primary occupation.
HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, Myrtle Lloyd, expressed gratitude to the millions who adhered to the January 31 deadline. Lloyd emphasized the importance of filing returns promptly as delays may result in penalties and late payment charges.
She advised those missing the deadline to expedite their return filing process to avoid additional penalties and interest charges. In other news, Tony’s Chocolonely witnessed a surge in chocolate bar sales despite price hikes due to increased cocoa expenses. The company reported revenues of €240 million (£207 million) in the year ending September, marking a 20% growth compared to the previous year, with a 4% increase in sales volume year-on-year.
Additionally, Tony’s disclosed that revenues in the UK and Ireland amounted to €51.2 million (£44.2 million), reflecting a 14% rise from the preceding year.
