Renowned Winter Olympics icon Lindsey Vonn demonstrated unwavering support for Team USA despite a harrowing crash during the Winter Olympics. Vonn’s teammate, Breezy Johnson, disclosed that Vonn, while being airlifted following her fall in the downhill event at Cortina d’Ampezzo, was actively cheering Johnson’s performance.
Lindsey Vonn, aged 41, returned to the Winter Olympics for the first time since 2018 after a hiatus from the sport and skipping the 2022 Games. Unfortunately, her comeback on Sunday was marred by a terrifying incident when she collided with a flag marker on the course, resulting in a dramatic fall.
The crash was especially devastating as Vonn, who has undergone surgery since then, had recently revealed a severe ACL injury in her left knee just a week before her Olympic return. While some criticized the decision to allow the veteran athlete to compete, others commended her bravery and resolve.
Johnson, aged 30, offered her support and mentioned that Vonn was celebrating her achievements even while being airlifted to safety. Johnson had completed her run before Vonn’s accident and managed to secure the top position on the podium.

“Her coach mentioned she was rooting for me while in the helicopter, and my thoughts are with her,” Johnson stated. “I hope for her swift recovery. It’s heartbreaking to witness such challenges in this sport sometimes.
“I had a strong intuition, and it still feels surreal. I knew I had to push myself harder than in practice. I couldn’t afford any mistakes.”
Johnson claimed the gold medal, finishing a mere 0.04 seconds ahead of Emma Aicher from Germany, securing her first Olympic medal and becoming the second American to win gold in this event after Vonn’s victory in 2010.
Vonn’s distressing screams following the crash evoked an emotional response from BBC commentator Chemmy Alcott, who became visibly moved describing the scene as Vonn lay injured. Johnson also sent a heartfelt message of support to Vonn as she celebrated her career milestone.
“I wish you all the best and look forward to your return,” she expressed. “Your accomplishments are truly remarkable, and my thoughts are with you, wishing you the best.”

About a year ago, Johnson celebrated another career highlight at the 2025 Alpine World Ski Championships, where she secured her first world titles in the downhill and team combined events in Austria.
After missing the 2022 Winter Olympics due to injury, Johnson made a significant impact this time around. With Vonn supporting her from a distance, Johnson’s impressive run of one minute and 36.10 seconds secured her the top prize.
Recently, Johnson defended Vonn’s decision to compete despite her knee injury. Responding to a fan’s query on a social media platform, Johnson highlighted that there are often undisclosed details surrounding athletes’ conditions and choices.
