“Trump Sets Peace Plan Deadline for Ukraine Amid Criticism”

Amidst escalating tensions, Donald Trump criticized Ukraine’s leadership on social media for failing to acknowledge US efforts in regard to a contentious peace proposal. The US President reportedly set a deadline for Kyiv to accept a 28-point plan, which includes concessions to Russia such as reducing Ukraine’s military strength and forgoing NATO membership aspirations, despite reservations expressed by European leaders like Keir Starmer.

Discussions were underway in Geneva on Sunday involving Ukraine, the US, and European nations regarding the proposed peace plan. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the importance of the American proposals aligning with Ukraine’s interests based on initial talks.

However, Trump voiced disappointment over the lack of gratitude from Ukrainian leadership and criticized Europe for continuing to purchase oil from Russia. European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the importance of upholding Ukraine’s sovereignty and freedom to determine its own future, cautioning against any compromise on the country’s armed forces.

While European leaders, including Starmer, acknowledged certain positive aspects of the US plan, they raised concerns about its overall impact on achieving lasting peace. Starmer engaged in discussions with Trump to address the ongoing developments in Geneva, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to secure a fair and enduring resolution.

Highlighting the significance of Ukrainian self-determination, Cabinet minister Heidi Alexander stressed that the fate of Ukraine should be decided by its citizens. Additionally, she emphasized the necessity for further refinement of the peace plan, asserting the UK’s influential role in engaging with global partners to facilitate meaningful dialogues.
