“Foreign Accounts Pose as Pro-Trump Supporters on Twitter”

Accounts supporting Donald Trump and the MAGA movement on Twitter that gained attention were revealed to originate from Eastern Europe and other regions.

Following Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter in October 2022, the platform introduced a feature allowing users to profit from their popular posts. This led to a surge in unidentified profiles seeking engagement through pro-Trump and MAGA content, prompting suspicions that these accounts were not based in the US.

To earn money from their posts, users are required to actively monetize their content in addition to having an XPremium subscription. Although Musk intended this measure to combat bots on the platform, it inadvertently incentivized accounts outside the US to generate controversy or appeal to specific groups to raise funds.

Several accounts were found to misrepresent their locations. For instance, a profile posing as White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt’s husband claimed to be an “America patriot” from Nigeria. Another account sharing news about White House Border Czar Tom Homan, supposedly from Virginia, was actually managed from a non-EU Eastern European country.

Accounts like AmericanPatriot and Fan Trump Army, with significant followings, falsely claimed to be based in Florida and the US but were traced to locations such as Chile and south Asia, respectively. Similarly, accounts using names and images of Trump family members were revealed to operate from abroad, including Barron Trump News based in Eastern Europe.

Twitter’s head of product, Nikita Bier, announced plans to implement a feature displaying an account’s country or region of origin to enhance transparency and trust. This move was applauded for providing users with more information about the accounts they engage with.

The initiative received positive feedback for increasing accountability and transparency on the platform, exposing not only pro-Trump accounts from overseas but also accounts supporting different political affiliations like pro-Democrat profiles from Africa and pro-Israel accounts from countries such as India.
