Nigel Farage, feeling uneasy, light-heartedly suggested that Queen Elizabeth II could have sympathized with Vladimir Putin while facing criticism for his favorable comments about the Russian leader.
Keir Starmer has called for an inquiry into potential connections between Reform UK and Russia after the party’s former Welsh leader, Nathan Gill, was sentenced to over a decade in prison for accepting payments to advocate for pro-Russian views in the European Parliament.
Gill was handed a 10-and-a-half-year jail term for receiving £40,000 in exchange for promoting pro-Russian narratives in the European Parliament.
Responding to questions about his previous statements on Putin and the recent scrutiny, Farage drew a peculiar comparison to the Queen, hinting at her potential sympathy towards Putin following their meetings.
Farage also downplayed the issue, suggesting that Gill’s actions were isolated and emphasizing that the focus should be more on UKIP than Reform UK.
The Reform leader continues to face backlash for his past comments in 2014 where he expressed admiration for Putin as a political figure but not as a person. He had also criticized the EU for its approach towards Russia amid the Ukraine conflict and had made numerous appearances on Russia Today between 2010 and 2014.
In a recent interview, Farage was criticized for downplaying Ukraine’s prospects in the conflict and implying that Western involvement was only prolonging the stalemate.
Farage’s past statements and affiliations with Russia have raised concerns and sparked debates over his views on Putin and the handling of international relations.
