An urgent warning has been issued to all Android and iPhone users regarding the potential risks associated with using unofficial chargers. With many new devices now excluding chargers in the package, consumers are left to purchase them separately, often leading to the search for cheaper alternatives. However, consumer advocacy group Which? has raised alarms about the safety of such bargain chargers.
In a recent investigation, Which? purchased various chargers from online platforms like Amazon, AliExpress, eBay, and others. Shockingly, the tests revealed that nine of the chargers posed electric shock risks due to substandard manufacturing, while eight were identified as potential fire hazards.
One particularly concerning discovery was a counterfeit charger designed to resemble an Apple USB-C 35W Power Adapter, complete with Apple branding on the packaging. Despite its appearance, the product failed safety tests conducted by Which?.
Further examination uncovered chargers lacking mandatory safety markings and devices with poorly designed internal circuitry that could lead to overheating, fires, or explosions. This isn’t the first time Which? has highlighted the dangers of unsafe electrical products sold on online platforms.
Sue Davies, Head of Consumer Protection Policy at Which?, emphasized the severe consequences that poorly designed electrical products can have and called for stricter product safety laws for online marketplaces. She urged the government to implement clear legal obligations and robust enforcement measures to protect consumers.
Responding to the concerns, Amazon emphasized its commitment to customer safety and collaboration with Electrical Safety First to ensure safe charging practices. The company stated that all products on its platform must adhere to laws and regulations, and any identified problematic chargers have been removed. B&Q also reiterated its dedication to product safety and actively prevents the sale of recalled items on its Marketplace.
Consumers are advised to purchase chargers from reputable retailers or trusted brands like Apple, Belkin, Anker, and Samsung to mitigate safety risks associated with cheaper alternatives. While these options may come at a higher price, experts caution that the potential dangers of using uncertified chargers outweigh any cost savings.
