The future of the head of the Office for Budget Responsibility is uncertain following the recent leak scandal related to the Budget.
Richard Hughes, the Chair, faced queries about the possibility of resigning due to what is considered the most significant Budget breach since 1996. He, however, stated his commitment to following the directives of the Treasury and a group of MPs.
Having earned £217,000 in salary and retirement benefits last year, Mr. Hughes attributed a premature upload of the OBR’s critical evaluation of the government’s fiscal plans to a “technical error” and a “mistake” within the organization.
During a press briefing, he explained, “The document was inadvertently published on our website ahead of schedule. We have launched an inquiry into the reasons and circumstances surrounding this incident.
“This investigation will present its findings to our oversight board, the Treasury, and the Treasury Committee, and I will comply with their recommendations.”
Continuing, he emphasized, “We are treating this matter with utmost seriousness. We comprehend the cause and are working to identify the underlying issues to prevent a recurrence. This was an error on the part of the OBR.”
This breach is believed to be the most severe since November 1996 when a substantial portion of the Budget was leaked to the Daily Mirror. The newspaper obtained 36 documents, primarily press releases intended for distribution after the Chancellor’s speech.
Mr. Hughes commenced his initial five-year tenure as OBR Chair in October 2020. His appointment was extended this July by the Commons Treasury Committee. Educated at Harvard University and the University of Oxford, he commenced his career at the Treasury in 2000.
