“Virgin Media O2 to Phase Out 2G Network by 2029”

In the UK, even though most new phones now operate on speedy 4G and 5G networks, the older 2G technology from 1993 is still in use. Despite its age, 2G continues to support certain devices like phones, alarms, and health gadgets.

However, the days of 2G are numbered as Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to shut down this mobile network in 2029. This move is part of the company’s strategy to modernize its infrastructure and enhance future connectivity.

While it marks the end of an era, retiring 2G will enable Virgin Media O2 to focus on strengthening its 4G and 5G networks. The company anticipates that this upgrade will result in faster speeds, more reliable connections, and reduced energy consumption, meeting the demands of consumers.

Jeanie York, Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, stated, “We’re investing £700m this year to transform our mobile network and ensure it can keep pace with growing consumer demand. As we look ahead, we’ll be phasing out the old 2G network to prioritize providing all customers with reliable and efficient 4G and 5G services.”

With the planned shutdown in 2029, customers and businesses will have time to prepare and update any devices reliant on 2G technology.

2G, introduced in the UK in 1993, has been a cornerstone of mobile communication for years, offering reliable voice calls, text messaging, and broad coverage. While newer networks like 4G and 5G offer faster data speeds, 2G remains valuable due to its reliability, energy efficiency, and extensive coverage.

As the demand for advanced mobile services grows, Virgin Media O2 aims to shift away from 2G to focus on advancing connectivity for the future.
