Deadly Floods and Landslides Strike Sumatra, Indonesia

At least 10 individuals have lost their lives, with six individuals still unaccounted for following heavy downpours triggering sudden floods and landslides on Sumatra island in Indonesia.

Emergency response teams are actively engaged in reaching the regions impacted by the monsoon rains across North Sumatra province in Indonesia. The overflow of rivers has caused devastation, scattering debris and tearing through villages in six affected regencies.

The search and rescue operations have successfully retrieved five deceased bodies and assisted three injured individuals in Sibolga city. Additionally, four fatalities were reported in the adjacent Central Tapanuli district, while one person succumbed to injuries in South Tapanuli district after a tree, uprooted by the floods and landslides, struck them.

According to reports by the Associated Press, Eddy Inganta, the police chief of Sibolga, confirmed the establishment of emergency shelters and issued urgent evacuation orders for residents residing in high-risk zones.

Inganta mentioned that adverse weather conditions and mudslides have impeded the ongoing rescue efforts.

Indonesia, being the largest archipelago globally, accommodates millions of residents living in mountainous regions and fertile floodplains among its 17,000 islands. The country experiences frequent flooding and landslides due to seasonal rains lasting from October to March.

The recent flooding occurred on November 25, coinciding with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency’s announcement of concluding relief operations after ten days in two regions of Java island. The relief efforts were called off following the recovery of 38 deceased individuals from landslides triggered by heavy rainfall.

Over 1,000 rescue personnel were mobilized to search for survivors trapped under the debris caused by torrential rains and landslides.
