Health experts are cautioning that you may experience a recurring “unpleasant” sickness this winter. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has clarified that even if you have previously contracted norovirus, there is a possibility of getting infected again.
Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, is a highly contagious ailment that triggers symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. Consequently, the NHS advises individuals to steer clear of schools and hospitals until at least 48 hours after symptoms have subsided.
In a social media update on platform X, the UKHSA emphasized the risk of reinfection, stating, “If you’ve recently recovered from norovirus, the last thing you want is a second bout.” They also shared an infographic highlighting the fact that recurrent infections are possible during the same season.
According to the NHS website, norovirus typically manifests suddenly but usually resolves within a couple of days. However, the interim period can be uncomfortable with symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea.
The NHS outlines that norovirus symptoms can manifest rapidly and commonly involve nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, along with additional indicators such as a high temperature, headaches, stomach cramps, and muscle soreness.
To prevent further transmission of the virus, individuals experiencing symptoms are advised by the health service to avoid schools, workplaces, hospitals, and care facilities until 48 hours post-symptom cessation. Recovery is typically achieved within two to three days, emphasizing the importance of maintaining adequate hydration.
The NHS emphasizes the significance of fluid intake to prevent dehydration as a crucial step in managing norovirus infections.
Norovirus transmission can occur due to inadequate hand hygiene after using the restroom. Infection risks include close contact with an infected person, contact with contaminated surfaces or objects followed by touching the face, or consuming food prepared by an individual carrying the virus.
Apart from self-isolation during illness, the NHS recommends various measures to contain the virus, including:
– Thoroughly wash hands after using the restroom
– Avoid close contact with infected individuals
– Disinfect surfaces regularly
– Maintain personal hygiene
If symptoms arise, individuals are advised by the NHS to:
– Stay hydrated
– Rest and avoid contact with others
– Seek medical advice if necessary
