Palestinian medical authorities have verified that Israel has transferred an additional 15 Palestinian bodies, marking the completion of the recent body exchange process under the ceasefire agreement. This development signals the near conclusion of the initial phase of the agreement, leaving only two bodies of hostages taken at the onset of the conflict in Gaza.
The handover occurred following the return of Israeli hostage Dror Or’s remains by Palestinian militants, who had killed him during an attack on October 7, 2023. Israel has now repatriated a total of 345 Palestinian bodies to Gaza since the exchange initiative commenced last month, as confirmed by the Gaza Health Ministry.
Currently, two hostages, one Israeli and one Thai national, remain in Gaza. Hamas has affirmed its commitment to honoring the agreement and ensuring the return of both hostages.
A meeting involving Turkish, Qatari, and Egyptian officials was held in Cairo to discuss the upcoming stages of the ceasefire, which began in October and has largely held despite allegations of breaches by both sides. The subsequent phases of the accord entail the deployment of an international stabilization force and the establishment of an international body to govern Gaza and supervise its reconstruction efforts.
An international stabilization force will be responsible for maintaining security and overseeing the disarmament of Hamas, meeting a crucial demand from Israel. Indonesia has announced plans to deploy 20,000 peacekeepers to support this force. However, uncertainties surround various aspects of the plan, including the timeline for implementation.
Meanwhile, the majority of Palestinians remain displaced and reliant on humanitarian assistance, with Hamas retaining significant control over a substantial portion of Gaza while reconstruction efforts are still in their nascent stages.
The Gaza Health Ministry reported that only 99 out of the 345 bodies returned by Israel have been identified, citing a lack of DNA testing kits in Gaza as a complicating factor.
Israel mourned the loss of Dror Or, the latest hostage whose remains were repatriated by Palestinian militants. Or and his wife, Yonat Or, were tragically killed during an attack on their community in Kibbutz Be’eri on October 7, 2023.
Before their tragic deaths, the couple heroically rescued their two children from their burning home, saving them from harm. The children, Alma and Noam, were subsequently abducted by militants but were later released in a hostage exchange in November 2023.
The Hostages Families Forum fondly remembered Or as a dedicated father and skilled cheesemaker who had worked at the Be’eri dairy for years. The attack on October 7, 2023, initiated the conflict in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of around 1,200 individuals in southern Israel and the abduction of 251 to Gaza by Palestinian militants.
With Or’s remains now repatriated, almost all hostages or their remains are no longer in Gaza. Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem reiterated the group’s commitment to delivering the remaining two hostages and concluding the exchange process.
Qassem called on mediators to pressure Israel to cease the alleged violations of the ceasefire. Tragically, a Palestinian civilian was reportedly killed by Israeli gunfire in central Gaza, with two others wounded in a separate incident near the Maghazi refugee camp.
Additionally, the Israeli military confirmed an operation targeting a group of militants in Rafah, resulting in one militant being killed. Since the ceasefire commenced on October 11, Gaza Health Ministry data indicates that 345 Palestinians have been killed and 889 wounded in the region, with an estimated 70,000 fatalities during Israel’s offensive in Gaza.
