“Hong Kong Pet Rescue: Hundreds Trapped After Building Fire”

Hundreds of pets are believed to be trapped in the aftermath of a devastating incident at a residential building in Hong Kong. The animals were stranded due to a fire that rapidly spread on bamboo scaffolding surrounding the complex during renovation work. Zoie Cheng Kam-shan, the business development director of the Hong Kong Pet Club, mentioned that the organization dispatched two pet ambulances to the site to assist in rescuing and transferring animals to nearby veterinary facilities.

According to Kam-shan, it is estimated that each block houses more than 10 pets of various species, with over 70 reports received and more expected, potentially totaling over 100 animals affected. Concerns were raised by survivors of the disaster regarding the failure of fire alarms to activate promptly as the fire started. Residents reported that the alarms did not sound even after they detected the smell of smoke.

Residents expressed frustration over the lack of timely alerts, with some claiming that they were only notified to evacuate after a security guard knocked on their doors, leaving little time to escape. Criticism was also directed at the quality of construction work and workers’ behavior, with complaints about smoking on the premises. Evacuated residents highlighted their concerns about the emergency response and questioned the effectiveness of safety measures.

The tragic incident has resulted in at least 13 fatalities, including a heroic firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty. The firefighter, Ho Wai-ho, aged 37, succumbed to injuries sustained during the operation. The ongoing rescue efforts involve a large number of firefighters and police officers, with concerns about additional casualties as the fire continues to engulf the building complex.

The community has come together to support those affected by the disaster, with temporary shelters set up for evacuated residents. Medical facilities are treating individuals injured in the incident, with some reported to be in critical condition. President Xi Jinping of China has expressed condolences for the victims and called for swift actions to contain the fire and minimize further harm.

Local authorities have activated emergency response centers to coordinate rescue operations and address the aftermath of the tragedy. The densely populated area of Tai Po, where the incident occurred, is under close monitoring, and residents are advised to remain indoors for safety. The public is urged to avoid the affected area, and a hotline has been established for inquiries about casualties from the incident.
