Members of a new left-wing initiative led by Jeremy Corbyn have decided to permanently adopt the name “Your Party” during their recent conference in Liverpool. The conference, marked by internal conflicts, saw delegates voting on the official name among choices such as “Our Party,” “Popular Alliance,” and “For the Many.”
Following the voting process, Mr. Corbyn announced that “Your Party” had been chosen as the official name. In a significant move, members of the movement opted for a committee of “ordinary members” to steer the party, rejecting the traditional single leadership model. This decision, with 51.6% in favor of collective leadership, means neither Mr. Corbyn nor former Labour MP Zarah Sultana can run for the leadership position.
Ms. Sultana, who skipped the initial day of the conference due to expulsions-related issues, expressed enthusiasm for the outcome, describing the move towards collective leadership as “exciting.” Emphasizing the focus on member-driven democracy, she highlighted the vision of establishing a new socialist party characterized by grassroots involvement and a mass movement.
A spokesperson for Your Party emphasized the unique approach to politics, emphasizing a bottom-up structure over a top-down hierarchy. The party aims to provide a distinct alternative to the conventional political landscape, with a commitment to democratic principles, grassroots engagement, and accountability.
