“PIP Benefit Duration Extended to Alleviate Backlog”

The duration of benefits for individuals initiating a new claim for Personal Independence Payment (PIP) will be prolonged starting in April to alleviate the existing backlog.

PIP stands as the primary disability allowance for working-age individuals in the UK. Qualification for PIP is contingent upon the need for additional assistance with daily activities due to a health issue, disability, or mental health condition.

Notably, PIP entitlement is not solely determined by the medical condition but by its impact on the individual’s daily life. Currently, PIP awards can be as brief as nine months, but starting from April 2026, this duration will be extended to a minimum of three years for most new PIP applicants aged 25 and above, potentially extending to five years upon subsequent review if eligibility persists.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has indicated that this adjustment aims to free up healthcare professionals to conduct more in-person assessments and carry out additional reassessments. These administrative modifications are distinct from the ongoing Timms Review, which examines PIP’s role, eligibility criteria for the daily living and mobility components, and the assessment process.

PIP comprises two components: the daily living component and the mobility component. The standard rate for the daily living component is £73.90 per week, while the higher rate is £110.40 per week. For the mobility component, the standard rate is £29.20 per week, and the higher rate is £77.05 per week. It is imperative to inform the DWP if there are any changes in health status or condition.

Individuals classified as terminally ill typically receive PIP automatically without the need for an assessment. Those granted PIP under the special rules for terminal illness will initially receive a three-year award before a reassessment.

PIP is accessible for individuals aged over 16 but below the state pension age. Claims for PIP will generally continue upon reaching state pension age, and a new claim may be feasible within 12 months of being eligible for PIP.
