Greggs enthusiasts may soon have the opportunity to buy sausage rolls and other baked goods from a vending machine. The bakery chain is exploring the implementation of “unattended retail solutions,” which will encompass both automated and manual vending options, according to Richard Hutton, Greggs’ chief financial officer.
Although no specific launch dates or locations have been disclosed yet, this development follows the successful introduction of three smaller Greggs Bitesize shops. Greggs recently announced a 17.9% decrease in its statutory pre-tax profits to £167.4 million for the year ending December 27 compared to the previous year, citing challenging market conditions and unusually warm weather as contributing factors.
In 2025, Greggs expanded its store network with 121 net openings, reaching a total of 2,739 locations. The company plans to open approximately 120 more stores this year, aiming to surpass 3,000 UK locations in the long term.
Roisin Currie, the CEO of Greggs, expressed optimism about future consumer spending due to easing inflationary pressures. However, she acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by customers and anticipated another tough year ahead.
Greggs recently confirmed that prices will remain stable for the remainder of the year, following a recent increase in the cost of items like the sausage roll. Despite price adjustments on certain items, the retailer maintained prices on meal deals, including the breakfast deal priced at £3.15.
Additionally, Greggs shared positive feedback on The Golden Flake Tavern, its inaugural pub concept offering beer, located in Newcastle’s Fenwick department store. The establishment has seen high patronage, with popular items including the Sausage Roll & Mash dish, along with over 4,000 pints of Gosforth 1939 Lager and more than 1,000 Pink Jammie Fizz cocktails sold.
