The Cabinet Office’s due diligence report specifically mentions allegations of Mandelson maintaining ties with Epstein post-conviction and staying at Epstein’s residence during incarceration.
There is internal dissatisfaction at Downing Street due to the withheld exchange between Morgan McSweeney, the then-chief of staff, and Lord Mandelson by Scotland Yard. Insiders believe that McSweeney’s inquiries could reveal Lord Mandelson’s falsehoods, with the latter claiming to have been truthful.
These disclosed documents are just a fraction of the extensive collection of papers, messages, and emails related to the appointment that the Government is obligated to disclose per Parliament’s orders.
Further revelations might include Mandelson’s communications with high-ranking officials. Concerns exist among diplomats regarding potential diplomatic issues with Donald Trump or other world leaders, even after parliamentary intelligence scrutiny of the files.
The core queries persist – what did Mr. Starmer know and when? While Starmer may not have been fully aware of their relationship, it remains plausible that Mandelson misled him.
Even if Starmer had not personally read reports on Mandelson and Epstein, he was briefed on the substantial risks involved, yet proceeded with the appointment. Perhaps he weighed these risks against Mandelson’s evident political acumen, successfully utilized with Trump.
It is conceivable that he received poor counsel from McSweeney, who resigned amid the controversy. The outcome of these files will determine the Prime Minister’s exoneration or culpability, with the ultimate responsibility resting on him.
